Treading Softly is an original watercolour inspired by the open moorland of Exmoor, where a small group of red deer stags stands along the distant horizon beneath a shifting sky. Their understated presence reinforces the scale of the surrounding landscape, allowing the wildlife to remain naturally connected to the moor rather than dominating the scene.

In the foreground, wind moves through golden grasses, with warm ochres and earthy browns contrasting against cooler blues and muted purples in the distance. Painted from direct observation, the work captures the quiet relationship between wildlife, weather and open space that characterises Exmoor’s high moorland.

Artwork & Finish

Painted in watercolour on smooth paper, the work uses transparent washes and successive layers of pigment to build depth and tonal variation. Softer transitions sit alongside more controlled painted marks, while areas of exposed paper contribute naturally to the light within the composition. The finished work retains the fluid, naturally matt character of watercolour.
