Thinking of Spring is an original oil painting inspired by the ancient woodland of the East Lyn River between Watersmeet and Rockford in Exmoor National Park. A mature beech tree anchors the foreground before a natural pathway draws the eye through the shadowed woodland towards a brighter clearing beyond.

Cool earth tones and textured undergrowth capture the lingering presence of winter, while scattered patches of sunlight and the gradually opening landscape suggest the first signs of seasonal change. Rather than depicting spring in full bloom, the painting captures the quieter anticipation of its arrival and the gradual return of light to the woodland.

Artwork & Finish

Painted in oils on canvas, the work combines layered applications of paint with selective impasto and softer, more finely blended passages. Areas of greater texture give the woodland physical presence, while thinner applications allow more delicate transitions of colour and light. A satin varnish protects the finished painting while maintaining a subtle, even sheen.
