Swaledale Ram presents a distinctive portrait of a Swaledale ram, with its sweeping curved horns and strongly defined facial structure forming the focus of the composition. Careful observation is balanced with looser washes, drips and shifts in tone, allowing the image to move naturally between definition and more expressive mark-making.

Originally inspired by photographs taken at the Hesket Newmarket Agricultural Show in Cumbria, the portrait combines transparent watercolour with splattered gold ink, introducing small points of contrast while retaining the naturalistic character of the animal.
