Surya’s Gift is an original oil painting inspired by the view from Downend Point at Croyde, North Devon, with Hartland Point visible along the distant horizon. The setting sun remains hidden behind cloud, its presence revealed through shafts of light spreading across the sky and descending towards the sea.

The illuminated atmosphere contrasts with the broad expanse of deep blue Atlantic below, creating a quiet balance between movement and stillness. Named after Surya, the Sanskrit word for the sun, the painting reflects on the presence and influence of light while remaining rooted in the familiar character of the North Devon coastline.

Artwork & Finish

Painted in oils on canvas, the work uses layered paint, fine brushwork and carefully blended passages to create gradual transitions of colour, cloud and atmospheric light. The surface remains predominantly smooth, with a protective varnish enriching the depth of the darker colours and luminosity of the lighter passages.
