Moorland Solstice is an original watercolour inspired by the open landscapes of Exmoor, combining direct observation of the high moor with a subtle symbolic element. The land occupies only the lower part of the composition, allowing the expansive sky, uninterrupted horizon and sense of space to become the dominant presence.

Suspended within the sky, a triangle enclosed within a circle introduces a quiet geometric focal point associated with harmony, alignment and natural cycles. Referencing the summer solstice, the painting brings landscape and symbolism together within a restrained, contemplative composition rooted in the openness and stillness of Exmoor.

Artwork & Finish

Painted in watercolour on textured paper, the work uses transparent washes and successive layers of pigment to build depth and subtle tonal variation. The paper gives the washes a gently varied character, while lighter areas remain visible beneath the transparent colour. The finished work retains the naturally matt and fluid qualities of watercolour.
