Let’s Fill Our Lungs is an original charcoal drawing inspired by Croyde Bay, North Devon, at spring low tide. The retreating sea reveals an expansive stretch of wet sand, where shallow pools and damp surfaces reflect the brightness of the summer sky and create a remarkable sense of openness.

Subtle tonal variations lead the eye towards clean lines of distant surf and the darker form of Downend headland. Working entirely in monochrome, the drawing uses the contrast between reflected light, exposed shoreline and distant land to capture the spacious atmosphere of Croyde at low tide.

Artwork & Finish

Drawn in charcoal on paper, the work combines soft blended passages with more deliberate linear marks to create a broad tonal range. Areas of exposed paper contribute to the luminosity of the shoreline and reflected light, while an archival fixative protects the finished charcoal surface.
