A restrained yet powerful seascape where distant waves pulse with energy felt as much as seen.
Available Original
Croyde – Distant Thunder is an original acrylic painting inspired by the surf at Croyde, North Devon, looking across the bay towards the Downend reef. Clean lines of swell peel steadily in the distance, their bright breaking crests standing out against a deliberately restrained field of deep burnt sienna.
Subtle variations in tone define the sea, coastline and changing light, while richly textured foreground passages contrast with the smoother water beyond. The title reflects the deep, rolling sound of powerful surf carrying inland on larger swells, capturing something of the atmosphere and anticipation experienced along this familiar stretch of the North Devon coast.
Artwork & Finish
Painted in acrylic on canvas, the work uses successive layers of burnt sienna to build depth and tonal variation within its restricted palette. Heavier impasto creates a pronounced tactile surface across the foreground, contrasting with the smoother distant sea and sharply defined breaking waves. A protective varnish enriches the warmth and depth of the colour while protecting the finished surface.
